Most clients only work with approved contractors. They have to demonstrate that they are employing competent people and therefore make contractors jump through hoops to get on the approved list. The contractors feel it is worthwhile because they want to work with these prestigious clients.

More and more clients are turning to independent assessment bodies to assess the competence of contractors they want to employ. They may insist you are registered with SAFEcontractor or CHAS or Constructionline etc (go to a page where I explain each of these schemes). Some clients have even set up their own audit scheme managed by Achilles Information, to independently assess the competence of their contractors in many areas including ethics and recruitment procedures. Wouldn’t it be good if all clients were happy with one scheme or if all pre-qualification questionnaires were the same?!
